What is Chantix (Varenicline)?
Chantix, also known by its generic name, Varenicline, is marketed and sold by Pfizer. It is prescribed in order to assist adult individuals to quit smoking without the use of nicotine. Chantix is believed to bind to the same receptors in the patient's brain that nicotine does. Therefore, the pleasurable effects that normally accompany smoking are diminished. Over time, this decreases the patient's desire to continue smoking. It is the only medication of its type currently offered by a pharmaceutical company.

Side Effects of Chantix
Less serious side effects of Chantix include headache, persistent nausea, constipation, flatulence, and vomiting. More serious side effects include severe allergic reactions, nightmares, insomnia, depression, and suicidal thoughts. Chantix may also be linked to Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS), Hepatitis and liver failure, as well as some cases of accidents and occupational injury. Chantix should also not be taken in combination with certain drugs, such as insulin, some blood thinners, and asthma drugs.
Recent Reports of Chantix and Depression, Suicide
Depression and suicidal thoughts have been reported by some patients taking Chantix. Some reports of Chantix patients exhibiting severe behavioral changes have also surfaced. In some cases, patients have committed suicide while on Chantix, or shortly after discontinuing its use. The binding of Chantix to patient’s pleasure receptors may impair his or her ability to derive enjoyment from other activities. Physicians have been advised by the FDA to monitor patients closely for signs of depression, as well as some of these other more severe side effects.

FDA Issuance of Chantix Public Health Advisory
In February 2008 the FDA issued an alert to highlight important changes to the Warnings and Precautions sections of the prescription information for Chantix. The FDA reported that “serious neuropsychiatric symptoms have occurred in patients taking Chantix.” In light of the serious side effects that Chantix users experience, the FDA has requested that Pfizer modify the way in which it describes the potential side effects of the drug.
