Avandia

Avandia, which has the generic name of rosiglitazone maleate, is used to treat patients suffering from type 2 diabetes, also referred to as adult onset diabetes. Avandia is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline. It is a member of a relatively new class of diabetes medication called thiazolidinediones. Rezulin, also in this class of drugs, was pulled from the market as a result of several deaths. Both drugs treat type 2 diabetes by helping to control the body's level of blood sugar by decreasing insulin resistance, which, in turn, decreases the need for additional insulin.

Avandia may cause heart failure, edema, low blood sugar, weight gain, low red blood cell count, abnormal ovulation, and liver problems. Other common side effects include cold-like-symptoms and headaches.
